When choosing a suitable hub motor, many factors need to be considered comprehensively, especially when it is applied to service robots and other fields. The following is the disassembly of the hub motor selection steps according to the test and application:
First, understand the characteristics of hub motor
In-wheel motor, also known as external rotor DC brushless motor, whose rotor is located at the periphery of stator, can generate greater torque, which is suitable for low-speed and high-torque machines, such as robot industry. When selecting the model, we should pay special attention to the key indexes such as torque, load, speed and voltage.
Second, determine the load situation
For the service robot, the load mainly includes the robot’s own weight and load weight. This total weight will directly affect the torque of the required hub motor. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately measure or estimate the total weight of the robot before selecting the type.
Third, torque and speed selection
1. Torque selection:
① Calculate the required torque according to the total weight of the robot and the required motion characteristics (such as acceleration and deceleration).
(2) Select a hub motor with a slightly larger torque than the calculated torque to ensure sufficient power reserve to cope with sudden situations or performance degradation after long-term operation.
2. Speed selection:
① According to the running speed requirements of the robot, select the appropriate hub motor speed.
Note that there is usually a certain relationship between the rotational speed of the hub motor and the torque it produces, that is, the higher the rotational speed, the smaller the torque. Therefore, it is necessary to find a balance between speed and torque in the selection.
Fourth, consider other factors
1. Weight:
① The weight of in-wheel motor is also one of the important factors to be considered when selecting the type. Overweight motors may increase the overall weight of the robot and affect its sports performance and endurance. Therefore, on the premise of meeting the requirements of torque and speed, we should try our best to choose a lighter hub motor.
2. Size:
① The size of the hub motor should match the chassis or wheels of the robot to ensure the stability of installation and operation. When selecting the type, it is necessary to confirm whether the size parameters such as the diameter and height of the motor meet the design requirements of the robot.
② Communication protocol and control mode: According to the control system and communication protocol of the robot, the hub motor with corresponding communication interface and control mode is selected.
For example, if the robot adopts communication protocols such as CANopen or RS-485, the hub motor driver supporting these protocols should be selected.
